On 22nd January, 1916, 13th Middlesex of 73 Brigade, 24th Division began a 4 day spell in the front line at Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres salient where the trenches were in a poor state and where there was as lot of sniping activity taking place by the enemy. The Battalion Diary records that it was a quiet night and makes no mention of casualties. It may have been quiet by the standards of the time but that would have been no solace to eighteen year old Charles Camp who was killed in action on that day. |
